Justice Ronald Young, the convenor of a joint bench-profession seminar aimed at reducing trial times has announced the seminar planned for March and April 2010 in the main centres is to be postponed.
His Honour says the primary reason is the likely effect of the Criminal Procedure Simplification project proposals. Some of these proposals will affect aspects of practice and procedure intended to be covered at the seminar. He said it was preferable to postpone the seminar until the new procedure bill was passed. At that stage a seminar would be held dealing with the changes together with those topics that remain alive from the original seminar programme.
Justice Young said he was heartened by the wide interest in the seminar across the criminal bar which showed practitioners were interested in developing a prompt, fair and just criminal justice system by improving their service to their clients and the courts.
