Annual statistics

Workload statistics for New Zealand courts and tribunals are now available online.

These key court statistics provide a picture of court workloads over the past 12 months, and are updated every six months.

Statistics are provided for courts by jurisdiction and location. The following categories of statistics are available for the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, High Court, District Courts, and Specialist Courts and Tribunals:

1. Court workloads

  • New business
  • Disposals
  • Active cases

2. Waiting Times for scheduled hearings

  • Information on waiting times to trial/defended hearing is also available for the High Court.

Definitions and glossary

Definitions are available within each spreadsheet.

A glossary of terms is available.

These statistics are available for the following periods:

1 July 2013 - 30 June 2014

1 January 2013 - 31 December 2013

1 July 2012 - 30 June 2013

1 January 2012 - 31 December 2012

1 July 2011 - 30 June 2012

1 January - 31 December 2011

Court workload is seasonal, especially relating to numbers of active cases. It can be misleading to compare active cases and/or waiting times at 30 June with those at 31 December.
