Court of Appeal

The Court of Appeal deals predominantly with civil and criminal appeals from matters heard in the High Court and serious criminal matters heard in the District Court.

Criminal jurisdiction

Over the last two years the number of criminal appeals filed in the Court of Appeal has been decreasing.  In the 2014 calendar year there was a 15% decrease in the number of new appeals, from 508 cases in 2013 to 429.

For the 2014 calendar year this jurisdiction has also seen a:

  • 14% decrease in disposals – 446 cases from 521 cases
  • 6% decrease in the number of active criminal appeals – 287 cases from 304 cases

Civil jurisdiction

The number of new civil appeals in the Court of Appeal has decreased this year, after a steady increase since early 2008.  In the 2014 calendar year there was a 13% decrease in new civil appeals filed, from 295 cases in 2013 to 257 in the 2014.

For the 2014 calendar year this jurisdiction has seen a:

  • 29% increase in disposals – 320 cases from 249
  • 22% decrease in the number of active civil appeals – 186 cases from 237
