The Court of Appeal deals predominantly with civil and criminal appeals from matters heard in the High Court and serious criminal matters heard in the District Court.

Criminal jurisdiction

In 2016, 375 new criminal appeals were filed.  This compares to a total of 425 appeals filed in 2015.  Disposals increased by 1 per cent from 414 appeals disposed in 2015 to 419 in 2016.  The total number of active criminal appeals decreased by 14 per cent from 298 to 256. 

Civil jurisdiction

In the civil jurisdiction, the 214 new appeals filed in 2016 represents a 14 percent decrease compared to the previous year.  A total of 248 appeals were disposed, compared to 267 in 2015.  There was an 18 percent decrease in the total number of active civil appeals from 174 to 142.
