Note taking in court

From 1 June 2022, the policy for note-taking in court by people other than media, counsel and litigants will change.

From that date, the default position of all courts of New Zealand will be that taking notes using a pen and paper is permitted, unless a judge directs otherwise. For people other than media, counsel and litigants in person, permission will still be needed to take notes on an electronic device.

The Heads of Bench adopted this policy on the recommendation of Huakina kia Tika | Open Justice Committee.
