Court of Appeal Workload statistics for 1 July 2020 - 30 June 2021

In the 2020/2021 financial year the Court issued 691 judgments, an increase on the previous year’s 682.

Court workload

Total new business

The Court’s workload increased over the 2020/2021 financial year with a total of 663 appeals and 399 applications filed.  

Appeals

A total of 645 appeals were disposed of, an increase of 22 compared to the previous financial year. 

As at 30 June 2021, there were 496 appeals on hand, an increase of 18 compared to the same time last year. 

Applications

The 345 applications disposed of is an increase of 39 compared to the previous financial year.  

As at 30 June 2021, there were 168 applications on hand, 54 more than at the same time last year. 

Examples of the types of applications dealt with by the Court include leave to appeal, bail, name suppression, fresh evidence (civil) and disclosure (criminal) and jurisdictional issues. 

Criminal Jurisdiction

Criminal appeals

The number of new criminal appeals filed in the 2020/2021 financial year increased slightly with a total of 416 new appeals.  

A total of 429 criminal appeals were disposed of, 12 more than in the previous financial year. 

As at 30 June 2021, there were 286 criminal appeals on hand, a decrease of 13 compared to the same time last year. 

Criminal applications 

The number of new criminal applications filed in the 2020/2021 financial year decreased by 5 to 128 applications. 

The number of criminal applications disposed of increased by ten to 139. 

As at 30 June 2021, the number of criminal applications on hand decreased by 11 to 50 applications. 

Civil Jurisdiction

Civil appeals

The number of new civil appeals filed in the 2020/2021 financial year increased by 34 to 247 new appeals.  

The number of civil appeals disposed of increased by 10 to 216. 

As at 30 June 2021, there were 210 civil appeals on hand, an increase of 31 compared to the same time last year. 

Civil applications

The number of new civil applications filed in the 2020/2021 financial year increased by 92 to 271.  

The number of civil applications disposed of increased by 29 to 206. 

As at 30 June 2021, the number of civil applications on hand increased by 65 to 118 applications.
