Court of Appeal Workload statistics for 1 July 2019 - 30 June 2020

In the 2019/2020 financial year the Court issued 681 judgments, an increase on the previous year’s 633.

Court workload

Total new business

The Court’s workload decreased over the 2019/2020 financial year with a total of 613 appeals and 299 applications filed.  

Appeals

A total of 613 appeals were disposed of, a slight decrease compared to the previous financial year. 

As at 30 June 2020, there were 465 appeals on hand, a decrease of three compared to the same time last year.

Applications

The 304 applications disposed of is a decrease of seven compared to the previous financial year.  

As at 30 June 2020, there were 101 applications on hand, five fewer than at the same time last year. 

Examples of the types of applications dealt with by the Court include: leave to appeal, bail, name suppression, fresh evidence (civil) and disclosure (criminal) and jurisdictional issues. 

Criminal Jurisdiction

Criminal appeals

The number of new criminal appeals filed in the 2019/2020 financial year decreased slightly with a total of 403 new appeals.  

A total of 414 criminal appeals were disposed of; 11 more than in the previous financial year. 

As at 30 June 2020, there were 291 criminal appeals on hand, a decrease of 11 compared to the same time last year.

Criminal applications

The number of new criminal applications filed in the 2019/2020 financial year decreased by 2 to 129 applications. 

The number of criminal applications disposed of increased by 7 to 129. 

As at 30 June 2020, the number of criminal applications on hand remained same at  56 applications. 

Civil Jurisdiction

Civil appeals

The number of new civil appeals filed in the 2019/2020 financial year decreased slightly to 210 new appeals.  

The number of civil appeals disposed of decreased by 23 to 202. 

As at 30 June 2020, there were 174 civil appeals on hand, an increase of eight compared to the same time last year. 

Civil applications

The number of new civil applications filed in the 2019/2020 financial year remained the same at 107.  

The number of civil applications disposed of decreased by 14 to 175. 

As at 30 June 2020, the number of civil applications on hand decreased by five to 50 applications.
