Court of Appeal Workloads statistics for 1 July 2017 - 30 June 2018

Court workload

The Court’s workload increased slightly over the 2017/2018 financial year with a total of 647
appeals and 222 applications filed. This is a 1 percent increase on total workload compared
to 2016/2017. The total number of appeals disposed (638 appeals) has decreased slightly
compared to the previous year.

Criminal Jurisdiction

In the 2017/2018 financial year, new criminal appeal filings were steady compared to the
previous financial year, with a total of 417 new appeals. Criminal applications increased
from 73 to 85 applications. The number of criminal appeals disposed during 2017/2018
increased by 5 percent (18 appeals) to 415 disposals. As at 30 June 2018, the 283 criminal
appeals on hand represents a 2 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Civil Jurisdiction

In the 2017/2018 financial year, new civil appeal filings increased by 2 percent (4 appeals) to
230 new appeals compared to the preceding 12 months. New civil applications increased by
27 percent from 108 to 137 applications. The number of civil appeals disposed decreased
by 12 percent (29 appeals) to 223 appeals over the same period. As at 30 June 2018, the
161 civil appeals on hand is an increase of 7 percent compared to the previous year.
