Court of Appeal

The Court of Appeal deals predominantly with civil and criminal appeals from matters heard in the High Court and serious criminal matters heard in the District Court.

Criminal jurisdiction

In the 2015/16 financial year there was a 15% decrease in the number of new appeals, from 453 cases in 2014/15 to 383 in 2015/16.

In the 2015/16 financial year, the criminal jurisdiction has had a:

  • 10% increase in disposals – from 407 appeals to 449 appeals.
  • 21% decrease in the number of active criminal appeals – from 319 active criminal appeals to 253.

Civil jurisdiction

In the 2015/16 financial year there was a 7% decline in the number of new civil appeals filed, from 242 civil appeals in 2014/15 to 224 in 2015/16.

In the 2015/16 financial year, the civil jurisdiction has had a:

  • 16% decrease in disposals – from 285 appeals to 240 appeals.
  • 8% decrease in the number of active civil appeals – from 191 active appeals down to 176.
